7 mosques in Oxfordshire
Central Oxford Mosque is a Purpose built by the Pakistani community completed in 2003, Central Oxford Mosque sits at the heart of the community on Manzil Way, Oxford. With a 1,500+ capacity, the mosque regularly sees a full Friday worship and a host of classes and activities throughout the week. The mosque’s large carpark means worshippers and visitors alike travel far and wide to enjoy the peaceful, community atmosphere, once described as a ’spiritual oasis’ by a visitor. The story of the Central Oxford Mosque is exemplar of a true community effort to champion and raise funds for a space to cater for all. From its original site occupying a hall and adjacent building in Bath Street throughout the 1980’s and early 1990’s, the Pakistani community and COM Society realised that they would soon need a bigger space. Working together, they set upon a long eight year campaign to lobby the council for a site and permissions and raised a staggering £2m in independent, local donations. In the name of Almighty, Allah, individuals worked tirelessly over the eight years and beyond to gather funds, provide significant personal donations, canvass for support and work with the council to get adequate planning permits. An official ceremony on the 13th April 2001 marked with the laying of a foundation stone saw construction of the Mohammed Ehsam designed mosque begin. Everyone who helped the mosque get to where it is today will always be remembered and the COMs Committee extends continued gratitude.
